Why would I need this (in the future)? I have to buy a new mainboard and was wondering if Thunderbolt connectivity is a thing I should look for.

I don't really see any reasonable, or logical reason in which you'd actually need Thunderbolt for anything now, or in the foreseeable future.

Daisy chaining a lot of displays, or for one insane resolution display. Also high speed external storage solutions.

Plus there was a demo by a company (I don't remember the name off the top of my head.) that used the thunderbolt connector to output graphics load to an external GPU from a laptop.

I'm not an audiophile, I'm just really picky about my music... and my headphones... and my speakers... and my microphone. Other than that, I'm totally not an audiophile.

I think its greatest potential is in the mobile market.  Connecting external gpu's, storage etc. to small form factor laptops or tablets would be great.
