Hi,

So I'm going into 6th form next year (UK) and have decided that I want a Microsoft Surface to accompany me.

Should I get the 3 or the Pro model? Have already decided that I don't want the 4 as its probably too expensive for my needs

Thanks!!

The Pro 3 has better specs and comes with the pen. Those are pretty much the main differences in my mind. How much of those do you value?

The pen by the way is fantastic. I'm in University and you'll be amazed how many people actually have a Surface Pro variant for school. Extremely popular for writing notes with especially for math and science courses.

Go for the Pro 3.

Surface 3 will allow you to take notes and light web surfing. It is powered by an Atom CPU after all.

The only advantage that the Surface 3 has over the Surface Pro 3, is sub-pixel tracking for the pen.

Beside that you are trading off, performance in all levels (storage drive, CPU, and GPU), takes longer to charge, no fully adjustable stand (just 3 levels), small screen resolution and screen size, and weaker Intel support on the drivers (from what I am noticing personally).

An advantage of the Pro 3 is that you can get the Surface Pro 4 keyboard with it for the improved trackpad, and keyboard.

The Surface Pro 4, while costs more (as the Pro 3 price drop), you have more CPU and GPU performance, and less throttling due to the much improve cooling, and improved CPU power efficiency. You also enjoy a better pen, with improved tracking, and pen tips that you can replace for different writhing feel. Although you can use the pen with the Pro 3 (you have to buy is separately of course, comes with the pen tips when you do), you will lose the improve tracking from my understanding.

Surface 3: Web browsing, note taking, MS Office crap, great for school work

Surface PRO 3/4: Photo/Video editing and rendering on the fly + the stuff the Surface 3 can do

Video games: NEITHER. Get a gaming desktop or laptop if you need the portability

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!
