Has anyone ever experienced tearing below the refresh rate of their monitor? I'm trying to decide between a 1080p 144 Hz monitor or a 1440p 60Hz monitor. I know that if I get the 144 most of the time I will be below the refresh rate. I just want to know if I get a 144Hz, I won't be experiencing tearing like you do if you're above the refresh rate. Thanks guys!

The idea that tearing only happens when you're above the refresh frequency of your monitor is a myth. Tearing can happen at any framerate, it's just more common when you're above the refresh frequency.

Yes, of course. The only way to avoid it is either with Vsync or a variable refresh rate (Gsync, Freesync).

Tearing can happen below the monitor's refresh rate. It can depend on the game itself (some tear more than others) and your GPU. It's much less common under the refresh rate, but it does happen.

Ok good to know. I wanted to get your opinions on something else. I'm building a new PC with a 4790k and a 980 ti. I'm having trouble deciding whether to go with 1440p 60Hz or 1080p 144Hz. I don't really play competitively. I really enjoy competitive online games, but I'm not absolutely crazy about them. Which monitor do you think would be best? The XB270HU would be the best of both worlds but it's way too expensive.

Have you looked at the MG279Q? It's a fair bit cheaper than the Acer for a 1440p 144Hz IPS monitor, though it doesn't have G-SYNC.

Yeah I have looked at that one actually. I'm definitely considering it. I wish they just made a 1440p 144Hz monitor without any Adaptive sync tech. I've heard that Gsync is most effective in a particular range of fps. Is that true??

having gotten a 144hz monitor i can tell you that you will and can get tearing, how ever going from 60 to 144 is as amazing as going from 30 to 60

and it is vary smooth. just make sure you change your display adapter settings in windows so you will actually get the 144hz xD

Would you go with 1440p or 144Hz? Which is more a difference???

i would go with a 144hz 1440p. acer has one for 450$ and its pretty ballin. but if that's to much depends on if you wanna play cs go or not, i do kinda miss the color but that fresh rate tho.

is so good.

but you won't be able to go back if you do.

and the most noticeable tearing will be over the refresh rate. i was getting 400 fps at times in bioshock infinite and there was a lot of tearing

Again to correct the misinformation in this thread, yet again! With vsync off EVERY SINGLE FRAME tears, period, end of discussion. It doesn't matter what the refresh rate is, it can match the monitor and it will still tear on every single image (well except one in about every 1-3 million times but lets try not to be too pedantic).
