Linux On Chromebook?

At my school, each student is given a Chromebook for working and stuff, blah, blah, blah. Is there a way to put Ubuntu or another form of Linux on a say 8GB USB Stick and run Linux on the Chromebook WITHOUT wiping or messing up the Chrome OS?

if you need to give back the Chromebook to the school, i do not recommend installing other OS, it could mess up with some part of the Chrome OS (CMIIW)

That's why I want to know if I can run Linux from a USB WITHOUT messing up Chrome OS
