Is this ok?

Go to solution Solved by Brenz,

What you want to do isn't illegal but what others use it for / store on there could be. In which case its your computer in your house connected with a line you are paying for which you willingly allowed anyone to use. This does leave you responsible under the law so yes it could end up being illegal.

The plan is that i have 2 separate networks at my house (2 separate IP's not 2 routers) One is a 350meg internet connection and one is a 25 meg up and down connection. On the 25 up and down connection i want to connect a SSD to it and make a NAS that anyone in the entire world can use. Im not connecting to that network, because i dont want to get hacked, obviously...

I dont care what happens to teh SSD, but i want to see what happens to it, possibly by recording what goes in and out of my 25 meg router.

Everything is set

exept is this is OK..

anyone who has the IP can connect to it via FTP and fuck around with it

or DDOS it

or whathaveyou

i dont care if they ddos the Internet on that IP either sooo...

is this legal?

I thought this might make a good youtube video, with an explanation saying:

we gave people (anybody) access to a 128GB SSD for one month

lets see what they put on it in timelapse mode!

If there is no network connection from it to you then you are fine

It would be no different than some random other computer being hacked elsewhere in the world.  Does that affect you? :)

Well I wouldn't put it past 4chan.

If it is a completely separate unit and IP from the ISP, with an otherwise completely isolated computer on it, I don't see how anything could go wrong.

At first I just brushed this off as "yes of course; you're not doing anything wrong", since if anything it would be illegal for others to try to hack you, even if you basically invite them in by leaving it unsecured, but I got thinking a little more... Still don't believe it's illegal, but I wonder if you should do this?  Any computer a hacker can take advantage of, they will, and will probably use it for bad, so by doing this, you are basically funding/assisting the operation of anyone who wants to make use of compromised machines for evil.  Again, not illegal, but I'm not sure it's "right".

That seems like what someone like the FBI might do, except you'd be doing it without the proper authority

Well, aren't those Twitch things sort of like this?  They setup something like a game or OS and let everyone control it all at once?  If that's allowed, I guess this shouldn't be too different though...

yeah, making it impossible to "upload" those would be impossible - they could change the file extension and then change it back once it's in.  You would have to have a service running that prevents certain file types from running/being opened
