I'd get the 4690k because I'm cheap, and the performance is similar

i think the only reason to buy an older generation CPU (at this specific moment in time) would be to buy an 2011 v3 CPU and put it in an X99 mobo...

if your going to get an 115x CPU anyways... i dont see why you wouldnt buy a 'current gen' 1151 6600 cpu for the 'current gen' z170 chipset...

6600k, why buy something less powerful for a similar price?

He can also get a Xeon E3-1231v3 to get a more powerful CPU than a 4690k, save money on a cooler and a motherboard.

These are your two basic kits for Z97 and Z170...notice the Z170 is only a few bucks more and packs a better CPU, a better looking motherboard with more features and faster memory:

So unless you can find a significant deal on a Z97+4690K combo of some sort haswell IMHO is no longer worth it at this price, you don't save enough for it to be worth sacrificing the new better platform and ddr4 memory that you might even be able to re-use in your next platform upgrade versus ddr3 that will be instant trow away.

And still not have the performance of the 6600k. Only thing better for gaming other than the 6600k is the 6700k.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

In multithreaded workloads they're about the same.

haswell does not make sense unless you can find a significant combo deal of some sort...at current normal stock prices as you can see in my previous post you save like 30$ but you get a cheaper motherboard and slower outdated ddr3 ram...and the skylake platform has a ton of improved modern features. The CPU is also noticeably faster.
