Right now I'm thinking of getting an i3-4160 and a R9380. Will the CPU bottleneck the GPU?

Get an i5 if you're going to be gaming.

That's an interesting combination to consider. What's your budget? And are you looking to buy only the motherboard/processor, GPU, and memory, or do you need more on top of that?

Wife's build: Amethyst - Ryzen 9 3900X, 32GB G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200, ASUS Prime X570-P, EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 12GB, Corsair Obsidian 750D, Corsair RM1000 (yellow label)

I want an i5 but their too expensive cause Australia likes to tax the hell out of things. An i5-4460 is worth $260 ish

Well in that case there is no point you asking us if it will bottleneck or not. Just buy the equipment you want then get an upgrade down the line if you fall into problems.

While I'm at it is it worth the extra $100 to be able to over clock the i5 k series CPU, or is it better to just get the i5-4460?

Not in GPU bound games, Yes in some CPU bound games (to some degree) it really DOES depend on the game and how it handles cores/threading.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I'm biased, I prefer overclocking, I will never buy a locked CPU for gaming etc, locked chips are for workstations.

You dont get $100 of extra performance, maybe 5-10% better CPU performance, so..its hard to say its worth it

a 4460 and h81 board is a cheap way to get a lot of gaming performance

Says the guy with an unlocked CPU he isn't even overclocking...?

So what? its not  creating a bottleneck so it makes no difference,

(also I believe that the automatic overclocking on my MSI board is on)

as it stands, a 4460 to a 4670k you are not getting $100 MORE performance, especially if it means eating into budget for memory, SSD, or GPU - which are arguably as important as a tiny bit of clock speed

SNIP

Whatever :) at least I dont have an FX8350 or crappy kingston ssd now SSD

(ok that was harsh)

but seriously, not everyone needs to sit around OCing all day to get a decent PC

Lmfao at least I didn't spend more money on features I'm not using...

Who said I am never going to use it?

4770 = £230

4770k = £260

I was buying a Z series ANYWAY board for Msata SSD and RAID 10

So it cost me £20

the cooler was for aesthetic reasons and was only £80 on sale anyway

So.... it probably cost me £40 in total more... and I have automatic OCing on, I just havnt pushed it because I dont feel the need
