I am looking for a CPU that is good for both rendering and gaming, and that has a good value, and is AMD (if possible) since I got a new AMD motherboard just 3 weeks ago, and would hate to replace it already. I currently have a FX8320 which is great for gaming but does not do a good job at rendering.

I HIGHLY recommend intel. i5 6 or 5th gen is fine. Yes it is more but it is worth it. I have been exsperience many AMD cpu die on me in the past and on other computers

Good for rendering and gaming? AMD? Nah.

Really though, AMD's best processor if you don't want a toaster PC (hot enough to toast bread,) is the FX-8350. I have it, and it's great for gaming/probably rendering, but I wouldn't recommend buying it these days.

Best things for rendering AND gaming are i7's and Xeons. Here's a good one if you're on a low budget: https://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646e31231v3

This Xeon is basically an i7 with no iGPU, and it's locked. But, it costs the same as a i5 4690k.

i5 4690k

i5's are NOT good for rendering, probably as good as the 8320.

If AMD, even a step up to the FX8350 isn't much of an upgrade. TBH, Intel does a better job overall in terms of CPU core performance. Processors like the 4770(k), 4790(k) (pretty much the same as 4770(k)), and even the Xeon E3 1231v3.

But,if the mobo is compatible and you're willing to wait, the AMD Zen CPUs seem to e pretty promising.

Don't be fooled by the bottom line of my sig, that is just for my travels.

the FX should really be the other way around, mediocre for gaming but great for rendering (on a budget)

Everybody says that but nobody that says it owns them.

He doesn't have the money for that. I don't think..

I regret getting AMD because it uses WAYY too much power.. but one good thing from amd is that you dont have to pay for heating because the computer will warm the whole house for you......

LMAO. Same with my crappy laptop, although it's intel based.

Yeah

Yeah. Though, really, look into that Xeon I linked (https://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646e31231v3) It would be awesome for rendering AND gaming. It has 4 cores with hyperthreading and no iGPU, but costs a good i5 in price. i7 would be around $100 USD or so more.

Oh, but you can't OC it.

I currently have a FX8320 which is great for gaming but does not do a good job at rendering.

If possible you can always start with just overclocking. The 8320 is an 8350 at slower clock speed. Not worth buying the 8350.

Everybody says that but nobody that says it owns them.

I can get 60fps in a fair number of games and very rarely go under 30. Its nothing amazing but still decent.

For rendering it is almost 1:1 on render time vs video length at 1080. 10 min for a 8 min video if I remember right.

does have a boost clock of 4.0GHz though right?

well you might wanna check your facts on render time, Im rendering a Cinema 4D file right now, 40 secs long, taking 30 minutes.

You absolutely do not need a $400 motherboard. That's ridiculous.

yes, both are the same CPU die, just the non-K does not have the option to

overclock (optional) as like the K-variant and turbos to upto 4.0GHz.

the 4790K has a turbo upto 4.4GHz

Well I only really need 4GHz for rendering and Gaming.

how do you know you only need 4GHz? and the max turbo is only on one core, not

all four cores/8 threads. overclocking K CPUs removes that limitation.

for rendering, threads and core speed are needed for reduced transcode times.

Different files. Different software. Different render times. Not everything is equal.

I have the FX-8350. In my main rig. I just wouldn't recommend it these days since there's better options for the same price.
