Hello,

I am looking to get the ASUS VG248QE. This is a 144Hz monitor. I have a couple questions. I have a GPU (980 Ti G1) that I believe can push out the frames I need. Is there anything I need to be worried about? I mean, do I need to push out 144 FPS to match the 144Hz? And, I also would like to hook up my PS4 to the monitor. I know that the console will not push out anywhere close to take advantage of that refresh rate. I would just like know if I will have any problems with hooking my PS4 up to it.

I know that I have to use either a display port cable or DVI for the 144Hz. I will, of course, be using HDMI for the PS4.

Please, forgive my ignorance on this matter. I thank you in advance for any and all help.

Thanks for the response. I know that I have to use the display port for 144Hz. I would really like to know about the FPS I have to shoot out to make this monitor worth it and about the PS4.

Thanks!

No. Basically, the monitor refreshes 144 times every second. This doesn't necessarily mean you need 144fps to match. In the real world, it just means the monitor will be easier on your eyes.

Alternatively, if you have a 60Hz monitor, you won't see more than 60fps (even if your graphics card is showing more) because it only refreshes 60 times a second.

Higher refresh rates are easier on the eyes. Don't know why, but science seems to point to that. It's why I'm looking at the same monitor.

Thanks!

The PS4 will operate just fine on the monitor.

I have an ASUS PB23Q 23" IPS 1080p/60Hz monitor right now. I think the response time is like 8ms or something. Is there enough difference between somehting like my monitor now and the ASUS VG248QE to make the purchase worth while? I am playing a lot of FPS games right now, like Battlefield, but also play single player stuff like Assassin's Creed, GTA, Metal Gear...etc.

I am wondering if I should be looking at monitors, at all lol.

Ultimately the decision to buy or not is yours. Honestly, if I had a 1080p/60Hz IPS monitor I'd be suuuuper happy. I'm personally looking at the VG248QE for video editing, and so I don't burn out my eyes staring at the screen all day (since my work always involves staring at my screen). But if you're just a casual gamer, I personally wouldn't see the need for upgrading. Then again, I'm running some generic AOC 1366x768 60hz VGA monitor with absolutely terrible viewing angle washouts right now, so understand my response is definitely biased toward "anything better than what I have right now is great."

If staring at the 60Hz screen for extended periods gives you a headache and hurts your eyes, then maybe upgrading to 144Hz will be worthwhile.

Another thing to look into for saving your eyes is a free program called F.lux, which helps to filter out some of the painful blue light wavelengths and works with the sunrise/sunset times for your location, and can be set to transition smoothly.

I had the Asus VG248QE.  I actually still have TWO of them (I have them on standby for backups and I've been screwing around backing up and bricking their firmwares and then unbricking them).  it's a HUGE upgrade from that 60hz monitor.  Trust me.  it's HUGE.

it also has a strobed backlight capability ("Lightboost") that can be activated by ToastyX's strobelight program.

http://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Strobelight-LightBoost-Utility-for-AMD-ATI-and-NVIDIA

And if you want to see how 144hz looks like IF you are getting 144 fps, here's a chart right here.

http://www.blurbusters.com/faq/60vs120vslb/

fyi, 144hz is 6.9ms persistence.  The persistence is simply (1000 / refresh rate) =ms, since milliseconds is 1000th of a second..  You can see the comparison graph below that.

------------

And yes, in order to get full benefit, you do need framerate=refresh rate, or higher, so yes at 144hz, you get the full benefit at 144 fps.

However as long as vsync isn't on, you will still have lower input lag at 144hz (lets say the game were running at 60 fps) than you would at 60hz.

And even if you are using HDMI for your console (which is limited to 60hz), the VG248QE will STILL Look better than your old monitor due to the "Tracefree" overdrive setting, which is better than most monitors on the market...only the Eizo Foris FG2421 and the Iiyama ProLite GB2488HSU

You can see how good the Ilyama's overdrive is here. (the other ilyama above it is much worse).

You can see the asus tracefree settings here, not going to attach the pictures.

Anyway you'll be happy with the VG248, considering what you're coming from.  I only retired mine because I upgraded to the Benq XL2720Z, for more adjustable blur reduction.
