Quick question about SLI/crossfire

If you are going for 3 way SLI/crossfire for say 7970s or 680s could you get a 7990 and an additional 7970, and similarly a 690 and an additional 680? To save on space and maybe a bit of power. Or are they incompatible when arranged that way. I'm not saying i'm planning on doing it, I'm just curious : D

No you can't, I would get a better single GPU card and wait for 9000 series.

The HD 7990 + HD 7950/HD 7970 works because AMD allows crossfire between any card in the same tier (79x0-79y0,78x0-78y0,77x0-77y0).

 

Nvidia locks it down to only SLI between identical GPU's (GTX 680-GTX 680,GTX 770-GTX 770,GTX 690-GTX 690)
