Just a Acer OEM Key, that probably works on more then 3 devices. Nothing to worry about.

It could be OEM key like said above. You and others can use it on that laptops/desktop its installed currently but not on any other machine.

Strange thing is. When I reinstalled windows using the image directly from Microsoft the product key didn't want to active. Why is this?

Laptops usually provide recovery media for reinstalls. Those get key directly from system recovery partition. When you use some other installer they have to do activation process which re-checks if key is already in use via online verification. Maybe thats why.
