R9 295x2 power consumption

Daniel123dk

Ok, so, this is finally happening. Im going to buy a used r9 295x2 slapping on a waterblock and add it to my custom loop. However, my psu is only 600w, how Much will i need?

- and, my custom loop is running on a 360mm radiator (45mm thick) with 3 sw2's pushing air onto it.

What should i do before getting the gpu (Gpu's)?

Thanks!

Looking at the reviews a good 850w should be fine.

I would go for a 1000w for a 295x2

For a 390x i would have gone 850w

you might want to add another rad to the loop as well

and 850 is fine... you dont need 1000 watts

My gpu and cpu is atm reaching 40 degrees at load each. Now ive got sw2's sitting on my rad, the temps should be even better

How about my cooling?

With all of that you could either get 850w or 1000w I know a lot of 295X2 users went with 850w or above.

A single 390x does NOT require 850w.

You want an ever bigger wattage? That's quite enough although perhaps you could go for 1200w

A single 390x does NOT require 850w.

I read somewhere that a PSU operates best at half capacity so 1000w will do best when around 500-600w  and 850w will do best around 425-450w

I'm not too familiar with radiators and water cooling. Looks good and sounds good but you may want to double check here.

120mm for each part cooled
so if you're cooling a cpu and two gpus you should be fine, might see a slight spike into 50C but thats about it

also, everytihng in your machine would probably hit about 650w underload with a 295x2 so a 850w would be best

Wow you have an 295x2. Yes it needs 850W PSU. If you putted water block onto it then try making an experiment with AIO that was on it. Like cool backplate with it :o (this works very well on Strix GTX 960 if you cool backplate with an AIO the fans never turn on)

You read wrong. A PSU operates the same at any load level if it's a good unit.

OP, 850W is what I'd recommend.

I run my Sapphire R9 290 Tri-x on a very old Corsair HX620 with no issues.

You're half way there, the 80+ certification guarantees that loads over 50% that the PSU is still going to be relatively efficient.

I thought this was a good read: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/understanding-the-80-plus-certification/3/

OP - I'd think an 850Watt PSU with 80+ cert from a reputable brand should be good.

80+ only translates to power efficiency, not quality. Though yeah, I'd say get something good and don't cheap out and buy the first 25$ CX/Diablotek/cheapo you find,
