iMac G3 internal video?

WaterproofBeanie

I have found a couple of old iMac Rubys for sale near where I live for cheap. I was thinking about doing some sort of case mod, and was wondering whether I would have to replace the screen. I remember hearing somewhere that Apple had used an internal VGA cable inside the iMac, which would make the process much easier. Does anyone know anything about this?

I don't think you can do that. It's never that simple w/ Apple.

Apple used to be. Then the New Mac "Pro" came out which unlike its predecessor doesn't allow you to change the CPU or GPU (I forget, one of those things are upgradable), doesn't have many slots for SSDs nor has it been refreshed for years...

You can change the CPU. If you can source a higher end GPU from a higher end Mac Pro, you can change that as well. There are aftermarket SSDs now (OWC carries some I believe).

It was released in late 2013 right as a workstation? How many people are still running consumer level Haswells and 700 series GPUs?

Apple hate is justifiable to a certain point, My GPU statement is a stretch. However, do some research (or did you forget to do that too?)

to the OP

Modding Apple cases but you can probably get a thin itx motherboard build with a laptop screen (double check the connection ribbon cable) or even just a regular monitor and mod it in. it's a pain, but I think it is well worth it.

Also have sentimental feelings to the g3... that's what we used in elementary school.

Silverstone FT-05: 8 Broadwell Xeon (6900k soon), Asus X99 A, Asus GTX 1070, 1tb Samsung 850 pro, NH-D15

Resist!

Bruh. I'm one of the bigger Apple fanboys here.

OK the last one was stretching it but you get the idea.

I actually didn't know both the CPU and GPU were upgradable and the last time I looked, the Mac Pro doesn't have more than one place for SSDs So no 3-4 SSD RAID setups.

My comment about GPUs was because a user on Mac Rumours (MacVidCards) was having a lot of difficulty flashing the right drivers or something when installing an nvidia card. Of course, AMD driver support is better with OSX (which I like since I love AMD)

Now on top of that, I'm typing this reply up on a rMBP late 2013 13" w/ 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD AND a 64GB iPhone 6 in my pocket. I'll upload proof if you want me to.

my bad on being so aggressive, but I'm pretty sick of the pointless apple hate. There is a reason to bash Apple but it it seems like a bandwagon at this point.

GPU was a stretch on my part as it is more "replaceable" rather than upgradeable depending on what sku from another macpro you can source.

CPU is upgradeable (OWC has done it, it's just an e5 xeon)

True on no raid. Depending on the card, drivers are a pain in the butt, haven't done a hackintosh in a few, but last time I did, it really depended on what brand GPU apple was using for that OS right?

The classic Mac Pro had truly upgradable GPUs. I think someone has crammed a 980Ti in their old cMPs.

Yep. It depends on the vendor Apple chose to support since the nMP has plenty of AMD drivers but none for Nvidia BUT! You can flash a modified EFI and modify kext files to enable support for unsupported GPUs.

If I'm lucky and OSX supports all the parts I'll be cramming in to my gaming rig next year, then I'll have a pretty sweet triple booting hackintosh to report back;)
