Windows licence help

Hey guys, I'm thinking of building a new machine and I had a question about the OS. I have Windows 7 on my current PC. When I build my new machine, is there any way that I can use that operating system in the new machine or any operating system that I have lying around on a hard drive? I remember Luke saying that one way to save money is if you have a hard drive lying around with an OS on it. Thanks for your help!

you just need to install the OS onto the new PC

 

call up Mircosoft automated activation phone line

 

provide your license ID and the system will provide you an activation ID

if you want to just reuse your old hard drive as luke said or if you want to move it to a new hard drive or ssd you can either migrate it or deactivat the license and download an iso of windows 7 and put the product key in

Will I have trouble with the activation process since the licence is tied to the hardware? Wouldn't that be in violation of the licence?

If you have a retail license then it is not tied to the hardware. You can move it as many times as you want, as long as you remove it from the previous system.

If you have an OEM license then I guess you can always call Microsoft and tell them your old motherboard is dead?
