I was hoping that Linus would go back and do a more in depth video on pfsense.  He touched on it lightly when he build the router but I would like to learn more about it, in the sense of home use for a small network, I’ve done some light research into it but most people gloss over a lot of the details throughout set up and especially the benefits just that there are many.

So basically what are the benefits of having a custom router?  Is there a point to butting in a big hard drive?  Can it do the job of a modem or do I need to change me isp's router to modem mode?  I imagine a powerful DIY router will be more useful to me with my 100mb fiber connection than someone on copper lines, is this true?  I like the idea of setting up my own VPN, can it be used for doing all encryption and decryption?  And some suggested specs for this worst case scenario in my student house. 1 PC, 1 console, 3 laptops, 4 phones all connected to wifi either gaming or streaming video.

The point of having a PC acting as a router:

More CPU power, so, performance doesn't get affected (More people connected the less the problems). Better Download speeds. Also, you can install it on a 20GB no need for large space, senseless you're in need of caching. Also Pfsense provides more features than a standard router

Modem is needed to provide the internet.
