Upgrade from A8/7770s

Go to solution Solved by Colours,

Thanks for all the help everyone! Appreciate it! :)

Hello,

I recently built my first pc back in january, I went with a low budget build with an A8-5600K and a 7770. Right now I have 2 7770s in CF after I started to get into PC gaming a lot more then I thought. I was looking to upgrade to the 8350 or 6350 and possibly a 7950. I would sell the 2 GPUs and the cpu/mobo. I mostly game and use the pc for basic things. I wasn't sure on whether to go with the 6350 or 8350 with my usage. Also I was planning on OCing, would a 970 chipset board be good enough?

Cheers

getting an 8350 and a decent cooler like the hyper 212 evo would be good but we are so close to the 9000 series so wait for that to come out before you upgrade

I'm not sure if the 970 chipset is good at overclocking, but most persons recommend the 990FX.

Also, what's your budget?

ok thanks. Cheapest I can get it

Ok, Yeah I have a 212 evo already. Im a cheap bum, a 7870/7950 would last me a few years

Just grab a gpu first. If you have cpu problems then, grab a new one afterwards. A single 7950/7970 now might just solve your problems.

it's not  that the 970 chipset is bad with overclocking it's that most of the motherboards have a small amount of power phases and cooling for those phases.

Wouldn't my cpu bottleneck it though or?

Unless your playing a cpu heavy game an apu actually doesn't do that bad against other cpu's on 1 graphics card http://www.anandtech.com/show/6934/choosing-a-gaming-cpu-single-multigpu-at-1440p/5

Depends on the game. It should do fine though. No need to upgrade if you don't have problems.

970 chipset still carries over most of 990fx's overclocking features, you just have to make sure the motherboards VRM will handle it :)

Also the 6350 is one of the best value chips on the market right now by a long long shot. It will handle most gaming tasks you throw at it comfortably, particularly once you OC it a little :) if you feel the need for an extra 2 cores then have a look at the 8320 instead of the 8350, It will still OC nicely and be a more logical match up with the 970 chipset boards as they wont have the VRM to match up with the max OC obtainable on a 8320 and wont have the legs to push an 8350 to it's limits :D

6300 as well as the 6350. Depending on the region, prices may vary greatly.

Honestly, most 970 boards around like $80+ have the VRM and power phases to handle around 4.5GHz.  I am at 4.4GHz myself and it's been fine!!

Hope this helps :)

I have a better proposition, the FX 8320, it's $40 less expensive than the 8350 but overclocks nearly as well as the 8350.
The $40 in savings will allow you buy a very good aftermarket cooler for the CPU and really take advantage of its overclocking potential.

The NZXT Havik 140mm CPU cooler is what I'd recommend it's only within a degree of the Noctua NH-D14 and the Corsair H80 (any double thickness liquid cooler) but it's less expensive.

The Asus M5A97 R2.0 is a perfect board for the job and it's what I'd recommend.

Also please take note that the HD 7970 has come down in price significantly, and comes with 3 games for free the 7950 remains an excellent choices however, and is has also come down in price.

The blue text links to Amazon.com webpages of the product.

I hope this helps.
