I am considering upgrading my Intel Pentium G3258 (OC at 4.2) to an I5 4690K for more demanding games that use more than 2 cores.

Because I have a Gigabyte B85M-D3H I updated the BIOS to the latest version which meant I could overclock the pentium quite a bit without any hassle.

However I have heard if I want to overclock this I5 (which of course I do) that it will cause my motherboard to heat up and cause problems.

Now I want to know if I can overclock the I5 on this motherboard or if I do, what will be the consequences and why?

Note: All voltage and clockspeed settings can be changed with the BIOS update

Motherboard: GIGABYTE B85M-D3H

CPU: Pentium G3258 (soon to be I5?)

Graphics card: R9 270X

RAM: 8Gb corsair LP

PSU: Corsair CX500m

Any advice would help! Thanks

your motherboard looks like it has some pretty decent heatsinks on it so i should be able to handle some overclocking without it overheating or anything.

Overclocking always makes thinks get hotter, that's just how it works. Just don't go crazy on the Over-volting.

if you are going for that expensive of a CPU, got for a Z97 board and a nice cooler, they help a lot

Also, i like Gigabyte's EasyTune software, it was a 1 click to 4.5GHz for me

NO , for D.C CPUs like 4690K or 4790K you need Z97 Chipset to overclock and a stable overclock. you better buy Gigabyte Z97 D3H or HD3 board of any similer better Z97 chip before doing that. i don't think B85 will support 4690K and using the large font is not needed we are read in small font too xD

DO NOT buy a gigabyte board if you're going to overclock the 4690k. the bios will not allow you to set adaptive mode for your vring after you've found the proper overclocked settings

get an msi, asus, or asrock board

read my cpu overclocking guide for more info, link in my forum signature

get a z97 board

i'd recommend the asus z97-e or z97-a

Devil's Canyon CPUs are nothing more than Haswell CPUs with a new TIM. Of course they are supported by B85.

It is even possible to overclock them on B85.

What? I run adaptive voltage on my 4690K with a GA-Z97X-UD3H-BK, so explain.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

how did you enable adaptive voltage for your vring?

Don't have to, Gigabyte runs it by default. If you manually enter a voltage that places it on static on some versions of the Bios, but mine is adaptive only. I have 1.220v entered but see a draw of 1.236v at full load. Idles around .8v.

which bios version do you have?

edit:

i have the z97x-ud3h and it's impossible to set adaptive voltage for the vring

F6 I think. There's 3 versions of my motherboard, each has it's own Bios. Been a nightmare to track down an issue with my sound card because of it.

The Bios for the Z97 boards is very easy, this is my fist time overclocking and I was able to figure out my Bios quicker that the software that came with my RGB keyboard. Gigabyte might be slow on their tech support but the hate over the Bios is pure propaganda.

Might be that you have a Z87 board. Not sure. Back up your bios because it will probably crash so be warned. But load XTU and hit adaptive voltage. If you survive it, you'll have it. DON'T do that unless you have duel bios. Very risky.

Wait so what's the verdict, some are saying that it will be fine because of the heatsinks on my motherboard but others say I cant overclock at all when I have already on the pentium?

Someone clean this post up :)

As far as I'm aware, the Pentium is a special case. I'm pretty sure that the core I series requires a z series board to oc. I could be wrong however.

My rig:

Why would it be different though? Just curious sorry for all the questions.

most z chipset boards are more expensive than the Pentium, the Pentium would lose it's value if you had to get a z97 board to oc on it.

I'm not sure if they removed that restriction for the unlocked i5s and i7s, but I'm pretty sure they didn't
