Faster SSD = Faster boot?

Go to solution Solved by bartekxx12,

Boot might be slightly faster but that's not really the important thing, all programs you have on your computer should also run slightly faster.

I would use Samsung's Data Migration software as I found it to be excellent.

I would even recommend doing it just because the 840 Pro is a more reliable drive and will take more writes before dying so... it might be nice to keep your OS on a more reliable drive.

Preface: Been watching LTT for about 3 years now, but this is my first post in here. Let me know if I make any major faux pas :D

Okay, a quick background. I ran out of room on my first SSD recently (OCZ Vertex 4 128GB), so I've bought and installed a Samsung 840 Pro 128GB. The OCZ drive has my OS (W8) on it.

After testing them both using CrystalDiskMark I noticed that, unsurprisingly, the Samsung SSD was noticeably (but not overwhelmingly) faster. My question is simple: Would this increased performance over the OCZ drive translate in the real world into a faster boot time (enough to warrant transferring the OS onto the Samsung drive) and if so, which imaging software would you guys recommend? The included Samsung Data Migration software, Acronis, something else?

Thanks in advance guys :)

Welcome to the forum! As for the boot time, you're really looking at a difference of a few seconds at most.

Personally I wouldn't notice the difference because regular SSDs like the Samsung 840 boots really quick so it might be a few seconds faster and starting up applications might be a few seconds faster which isn't much imo.

Not at the moment, SATA is holding SSDs back and welcome!

If you got a PCI-E SSD that would make a diffrence because as @Samdb said sata is limiting SSDs

SATA only limits sequential Read & Write speeds, SSD's are still far too slow to saturate SATA3 with random reads & writes, the 840 Pro is a faster drive, and is more reliable. Sure it might not provide a huge performance benefit but it will give a boost of some sort, and Samsung's SSD Magician is extremely easy to use.

I'm pretty sure all of us here don't mind spending a few minutes to make our PC's slightly faster. (overclocking)

It's some like this: http://ssdboss.com/ssds/Samsung-840-Pro-vs-OCZ-Vertex-4

About 7.8 seconds boot instead of 9.7 seconds for Windows 7 so slightly faster.

Thanks for all the quick replies and welcomes guys :)

I hadn't thought about it on the reliability front, given that the OCZ is about 18(ish) months old.

To do the Samsung Data Migration do I just delete the (so far empty) single partition I made on the Samsung and let the software do the rest? (I've heard it's supposed to be good).

If anyone could tell me or direct me to a guide that would be handy (especially as I'm sure there's some BIOS tweaking to be done to make it boot correctly, right).

Thanks again everyone :)

Yes delete the empty partition you made on the drive just to make sure it works without any problems .(Although I'm not sure if you have to delete it...)

Anyway a guide would be pointless -

Here is the program - http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/samsungssd/downloads/Samsung_Data_Migration_v2_Setup.zip

Extremely easy to follow step by step instructions within the program itself.

As for the BIOS, you will have to go into it and change your first boot device from the Vertex 4 to the 840 Pro, that is all.

Crackin'. Thanks, I'll give it a go in the morning (It's just gone past midnight here!).

If I have any problems I'll be sure to ask you guys. Linus was right, this forum is very different to most...in a good way, of course. I think I'm gonna like it here :D

While I still had the opportunity I booted off each disk and got 8.1s for the lovely new Samsung and 9.7s for the old OCZ (pretty similar to the link WoodenMarker posted). Nothing I can really notice without timing it, but it's definitely worth it for the (at least) extra 18 months of life :)

Give it a year or two 'til my next build and hopefully PCI-e SSD's will be cheap enough to see what they can really do for boot times :P

Thanks all.

Depends on motherboard and SSD. My SSD didn't like my older motherboard very much and boot was still fast but not as fast as now. New motherboard and Windows boots so fast compared to the original boot times.

My friends OCZ SSD completely skips the boot screen and goes straight to the desktop. Might completes the boot screen but skips the logging in screen and goes to desktop. His is faster than mine however.
