External HDD has a bracket on top of the connector

Ermodo

Hey,

I opened my external HDD because I was feeling some current on the usb-cable, when I pressed it against my fingers (only with the outside, not with the pins). On the inside I noticed a little bracket (metal), which was mounted on top of the usb-connector to the metal cover ove the actual HDD.

Does anybody know what that's for?

Should be there to ground the metal on the HDD.

why should it need to ground? My internal hasn't any metal connections with the case or psu

Well, is the external drive made of metal or plastic? If it's plastic, that might be why. Keep in mind that PC cases are steel or aluminum inside usually.

When grounded the metal plate is more effective as an elecromagnetic shield. It also prevents electrostatic charge build up.

Mineral oil and 40 kg aluminium heat sinks are a perfect combination: 73 cores and a Titan X, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Oil
