My friend dropped their iPhone today and they said it'd cost them £40-50 to repair, I thought this was a bit stupid as it only costs £10 for a replacement screen online.

I'm looking at the ifixit it guide and it says you have to remove the cables for the camera etc as well, is this really needed? Can't I just take off the glass screen and put a new one on?

This is the one I was looking at getting for it:

Well a shop will charge labour, plus they might be using more expensive parts, not some questionable screens off ebay

Yeah but I don't know if they can really afford that. I don't see how that much could go wrong really, it's only a taking a few cables out surely?

I watched the removal, I saw the amount of screws and various cables but for someone who hasn't done that sort of thing before, would it be a safer bet to let a professional do it?

Of course. And it's not your phone. If something terrible happens, then you have to pay for the screen and your friend's phone. I don't think this risk is smart to take.

If it was yours then it's a different story

Fair point, I'll see what they say, I'd rather not take the risk without at least practicing before hand

Or maybe there are technicians there willing to work freelance? In my country we have malls filled with technicians that can do absolutely anything at a low price point

A shop will most likely be using parts that have been refurbished (Apparently apple rejected a lot of the iPhone 5 displays, and then other companies took them and fixed them until they were 100% good(Screen.clinic did have an article on this, but they had to close and now their website is down unfortunately.)) Whereas that ebay link, while it is only £10 is most likely not genuine whatsoever, and you can't be sure of the quality of it. (Also, that kit requires you separate the LCD from the digitizer AFAIK, since they are bonded together. Obviously you would then need to bond them together again)

TL;DL : Get it done by a shop, it's much better quality and they do repairs like this every day

Specs: CPU: AMD FX 6300 Motherboard: Gigabyte 970A DS3P RAM: HyperX Fury 16GB 1866MHz GPU: MSI R9 270 OC edition Case: Sharkoon VS3-S SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB HDD: 1TB Caviar Blue PSU: Corsair CX500W

*If I say something that seems offensive, please don't take it seriously, it was most likely meant as a joke/sarcastically*

The price you got quotes is great get it done there, I fix screens and the part price has doubled in the last few months so I now charge £50 as apposed to £35 before. Normally we will buy the glass, digitizer and lcd replacement which costs £40 rather than just the glass you have found at £10. The problem with the glass is that it's very difficult to separate from the rest of the device and often results in you smashing the lcd anyway.

You could save a few quid by buying the full replacement set and replacing that for your friend, you can do it fairly easy if your organised and the tools that come with the screen will get you by at a push.
