CPU or GPU Upgrade?

Go to solution Solved by Senzelian,

I would go for it.

i don't know if it's really good suggestion but get another 680 and use sli bridge. it will be a good performance boost

Go for It.

Guys, all of you just won the internet.

No one of you obviously understood the question.

He has an old PC (specs in his signature) and wants to upgrade. He found a 2600k and a GTX 680 on Craigslist, but can only buy one of those...

Anyways...

I found a GTX 680 and an i7 2600 on craigslist. I have an LGA 1155 Mobo laying around, but no DDR3, so the Processor upgrade is going to be about $210 and the GPU upgrade is $170. My rig is old as hell and i'm not in a situation where i can save up my money and get something much better. what would be the better plan? I can only do one or the other

That's a tough choice. Your current rig is pretty much ... useless.

You need a solid base, so the graphics card doesn't seem like a good choice. Your current CPU would just be a massive bottleneck and that wouldn't help at all.

So I would probably go for the i7-2600k which is still a pretty good CPU. But I would also try to get that price down a little more. It's hard to justify that price for that CPU, if you can get a brand new i5-4460 for 170$, which does also perform pretty well when it comes to gaming.

I can only afford/fit/power one 680. Also, i don't have a 680, i'd be replacing my 560 with one

I would upgrade the CPu first. your current cpu would definitely hold back a 680 in many AAA games.

I think you should definitely go for the 680, a CPU upgrade wouldn't be nearly as beneficial.

The reason i'd like the i7 for the extra threads (like i editted it, i would like to use this for recording as well), but i am also considering an i5 and some DDR3

Yeah, hyperthreading is pretty nice for editing and other multithreaded stuff.

I'm curious, why do you have a 840 Pro 512GB, but such an old rig? That SSD must have been expensive.

right

Wow, we misread....

Nah, you guys were playing the "who gets the first post"-game  ;)

Next time just take your time to answer his question properly. Quality is what makes your answers great, not the quantity.

this used to be my grandpa's old computer. he hates windows and wanted more speed, so he bought this SSD and put ubuntu on it. He said i could have it if i got the machine running (he messed up the installation of ubuntu, so i threw windows 8.1 at it)
