Originally I ran two Seagate Barracuda 80 gigabyte drives in RAID 0, I've now added two WD Black 80gb drives to the array. All the "volatile" storage.

I think you mean non-volatile. Volatile memory is something that requires constant power to hold information, such as RAM.

What's the speeds like? I assume your drivers are fairly old and/or not high end because they are so small in capacity.

It's worth it all the way up to the moment one of the drives dies, then it might be the stupidest thing you've ever done.

Twice as much speed (except seek time) at the cost of twice as high risk of you losing all your data.

Its a scratch disk and a temp drive, where files sit till I move them to their proper location. And I mean volatile as in I have four used drives (Pulled them out of junk yarded school computers) in raid 0. As for their speed, all are "performance" drives from the two companies, 7200 rpm 16mb cache, nothing special, just like their bigger capacity brothers in every way

I have 2 Seagate 1TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache on raid 0 and one WD Caviar Green 2TB for storage/backups. So far it's pretty much worth it. My loading times are considerably faster: my windows 8 boots up in less than 10 seconds, I've never been the last one loading in multiplayer games, MMOs load in a few seconds and programs open quite fast as well. The only times when I wish it was a little faster is when I'm loading my heavily modded skyrim for the first time as it can take up to 10 seconds easily, after that the loads are much faster though and quickloads are practically instant. Though I wouldn't use 50GB of my SSD just for skyrim, so I guess getting an SSD wouldn't really make a difference.

 

With that said the risk of disk failure does increase, since if any of the drives fail the information becomes unusable, so frequently backing up important files is suggested if you use a lot of HDDs.

 

With that said two 1TB HDDs cost about the same as a 120 GB SSD and I think I made the right choice.

Boot times increased by about 2 seconds because of the RAID controller having to load, but write times and write speeds increased significantly.

 

No important data is stored in the RAID array, so if 1 dies I'm ok with it.

My motherboard may shit out on me at any moment but if does, not a problem, there is nothing important on my array.
