So I need some advice on a gaming pc I might possibly build (first time). I've amassed a list of components that I've found that could be used in this build. However, I'm really stuck as to what components are good for their price. I want to build a machine that is around 1000-1100 dollars but at the moment this build is too pricy :(. Any help would be much appreciated.

Here are the components:

Processor: Intel CPU Core i7 3770 3.4GHz 8M LGA 1155 Ivy Bridge

http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Core-i7-3770-Quad-Core-Processor/dp/B007SZ0EHE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376719220&sr=8-1&keywords=i7+3770

$119.99

Note:

Currently I own a DELL XPS 8300 with 12GB RAM, i7 2600, GTX 560Ti.

I want a new gaming orientated PC which must have 12GB of RAM, a GTX670 or other video card with identical or better performance (given it's  the same price). I don't mind about the other components. Only they must be an improvement to my machine now.

Thanks In Advance,

Fatherboard

Your current rig is fine. Just upgrade your gpu and/or get a ssd. Changing your cpu, mobo, and ram will give you very little gaming performance gain.

What are the specs of your current rig?

Something like a 7970 would be a good upgrade.

Why do you need 12GB of RAM? 8 will do fine for games.

Just throw in a better graphics card. Your CPU isn't really that outdated.

Desktop: Intel i5-3570K (stock) | Asus Sabertooth Z77 | G.Skill RipJaw 16GB 1600MHz | Samsung 840 120GB | EVGA GTX 680 SC+ 2GB | Fractal Design R4 | Windows 8 Pro (soon to have dual boot Mac OS X)

Retina Macbook Pro : Intel i7-3840QM | 16GB 1600 MHz | 256GB SSD | Nvidia GT 650M 1GB | Mac OS X 10.8.5

The only things I would change are the CPU to a haswell 4670K or if you are on a budget a AMD 8350 would do just as well (change the motherboard if you are changing to this), the GPU to something like a 7970 or a 770 and the RAM 8GB of RAM is more than enough otherwise looks good.

Thanks for the quick reply,

My current rig:

Dell XPS 8300

Intel Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.4GHz (8CPUs)

12GB RAM

Nvidia GeForce GTX 560Ti

460W PSU

BTW

1. Should I upgrade case+cooling because my PC tends to get really hot

2. What GPU do you recommend?

What about your storage? Do you have enough?

I'd probably recommend something like this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1sUnW

It should be able to max out almost everything at 1080p.

Storage isn't that big of an issue. An SSD would be a welcome addition though. I was wondering, is it viable to make the transition from a Nvidia GeForce GTX560Ti to a Sapphire Radeon HD 7970?

Yes. Just uninstall the old nvidia drivers and install the new ones.

If you're talking about performance, it would be a significant increase.

Fyi, I sort of just picked the case on a whim. Is there anything you're looking for in a case?

None because you cannot overclock your CPU but it could make it quieter.

Pretty much this^

Since you're not overclocking, the large fan can move slowly, be very quiet, and still provide lots of ample cooling..

Another option is 7990 which will offer about 60% more performance depending on the game

Overkill considering a single 7970 already maxes out almost everything at 1080p.

I don't think the OP is dying to game maxed out on a 1440p display anyway.

Upgrade the GPU and add an SSD you're good to go. i7-2600 is still a good processor. 600/650W psu will also be required. Do you have an aftermarket cpu cooler?

CPU: Ryzen 7-3700x 4.4GHz, MB: ASUS PRIME B450M-AGPU: SAPPHIRE RX 590, RAM: 16GB Corsair 3200MHz, SSD: 480GB Kingston HDD: 2TB WD Green, CHASSIS: CoolerMaster HAF 912, PSU: CoolerMaster Thunder 700W, COOLERHyper 212 Black Edition

For a case I wanted something that would be well ventilated, dark in colour (not white :P), preferably with a transparent side panel, and possibly lighting.

You don't get much more ventilation that this: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/nzxt-case-t410e001

If you want lighting, look at some Bitfenix Alchemy Strips and/or Bitfenix Spectres. Get the case first though before thinking about getting lights/fans to see how you like the look.
