Folding performance...?

I started by son's two computers on Folding @ Home, but I've got a question about how this thing works. I'm not disappointed or wanting to troubleshoot, but I noticed that the "Points Per Day" they each have are very different. Mind you, I'm not a greedy jerk that just wants to brag about points, I'm simply curious.

 

What causes one computer to earn more points than another?  Is it the work unit that it's currently crunching?  Or are the work units fairly static in their point allotment and the computers' hardware specs are the biggest determining factor?

 

One computer has an i5 4690k at stock speed (3.5GHz) and an R9 290 also at stock speed.  Through two work units, it has been scheduled at over 215,000 points per day.  

 

The other computer has an i7 4771 (also 3.5GHz) and a slightly overclocked GTX 970.  This one is fairly consistent at around 15,000 points per day.

~200K is about what I'd expect from the first system. The second one is pretty much consistent with what you'd expect from the CPU alone, it sounds like the GPU hadn't been kicked in to gear when you looked at it. PPD is simply a matter of computational power. Some work units are more difficult and take longer than others, but the point value of the unit should reflect that. Of course it won't be exact, but a modern CPU + powerful GPU combination should get around 150K-250K.

Yeah the folding points are pretty messed up. Mine gets stuck then goes backwards or goes from 200,000PPD to 80,000

~200K is about what I'd expect from the first system. The second one is pretty much consistent with what you'd expect from the CPU alone, it sounds like the GPU hadn't been kicked in to gear when you looked at it. PPD is simply a matter of computational power. Some work units are more difficult and take longer than others, but the point value of the unit should reflect that. Of course it won't be exact, but a modern CPU + powerful GPU combination should get around 150K-250K.

Huh. That might be it, then... the video card. Both Open Hardware Monitor and MSI Afterburner show the 970 bouncing up and down all over the place anywhere between 100% load and zero.

Because of this comment, and then looking at Afterburner, I figured it out. 

I took off the overclock on the 970 and restarted Folding.  GPU usage is solid in the upper 90's now. No more spikes.  And then the point accrual has gone up quite a bit, too. 

 

Thanks for the tip. I was able to fix a problem that hadn't yet shown itself in normal usage because there hasn't been much gaming done on this computer so far. (sucks to be a grounded teenager, huh)
