fallout 3 crashing.

Go to solution Solved by Gamer,

I had this exact problem and it was driving me crazy! I cannot remember exactly what to change (you'll need to search for this on youtube) but, I remember having to open up a fallout 3 file in notepad and change a line of code, or add a line and it was fixed! Sorry I can't tell you exactly but it should be easy to find now you know what to look for! Almost 100% sure this isn't a driver or hardware issue.

Edit: Found it, check the description for what to do:

Hey forum, my friend recently made the switch from console to PC and one of his favorite games of all time is fallout 3. Unfortunatley he says his game keeps on crashing and i've tried all i can to fix it so i'm coming to you guys for some more ideas. He has a direct CU2 760 and it's running 320.49 so it's not a beta driver. One thing i thought of is that is Vbios may need an update but i couldn't find an update for his card. I uninstalled and re installed his graphics drivers with a clean installation and that fixed the problem for a day and then the crashes came back. He's also un installed and re installed the game and that also fixed the issue for a day and then the issue just came back so what else could i try. I kind of want to stay away from a BIOS flash cause he doesn't really know what he's doing and I don't want him to brick his BIOS but if that's all you guys can think of then i guess i could help him do it. Thanks.

Do you have Games for Windows Live installed? It would keep crashing until I installed it on my system.

If he is running 7 then "fallout 3 is not optimised for windows 7". More to it - is it clean game or with added mods to it? And fallout will not run with quadcore cpus due to age of the game. I had to limit mine to 1 core for the game. Two or more would make CTD in matter of seconds after game loaded.

i don't think that's the problem because i'm running it on windows 7 with a quad core and my game hasn't crashed once yet. And i don't think he has any mods installed.

He doesn't have it installed nor do I. I haven't had any crashes though and i don't have games for windows live so i don't think that's the issue although i'll get him to install it.

Fallout 3 doesn't have official support for Windows 7. Have you tried running the .exe in compatibility mode with either XP or Vista?

yeah but me and another friend of mine both run fallout 3 on windows 7 with no problems at all so how come my other friend here is getting the crashed when we are running the same OS.

I'm pretty sure this is the issue since he's running the game on a 6300 so there is no way the game is optimized to run on a 6 core. Thanks for the link and hopefully it works.
