So me and my friend are planning on cannibalizing his current PC when he ends up upgrading it so that we can make a server for him to store and transfer photographs and other media throughout his home PC's.  I also would like to use this new server build to power some small minecraft, Killing Floor 1/2, etc servers with around 2-15 people max.

We are planning on using his current CPU which is an I5-3570k.  We are also planning on using his motherboard, RAM (but adding up to 32gb's if needed), one HDD and we will probably end up getting a 512GB SSD for some of the main stuff but use the HDD as a backup, his 650W PSU, and some simple peripherals to use it.

We need some assistance picking out a good case to go with this that is preferably a bit smaller than a mid but can still fit a full ATX motherboard.

If you think we could use some additional parts please let us know.

Our budget is around $500

As always, the help is much appreciated  :D

if storing photographs or other non-replacable files i would recommend adding a raid array to it

If you think all console gamers are "console peasants" then you dont belong to the pc master race

Well, you could instead use the i5 for his home server and get a second rig for the game servers, something like below, not sure how well a single i5 is going to be able to handle all that

or just use the 8320e for everything with virtual machines, and sell his current set up to further augment this build, or sell his current stuff and get a Xeon 1231v3 build for everything
