Can you have 2 different GPUs?

If not can someone explain why that is.

Also do you need to use crossfire/sli when you have 2 graphics cards?

Will it work without it?

You can, as long as they have the same graphics core, and the same amount of memory.

You don't need to enable CF/SLI if you have multiple graphics cards.

You can have multiple graphics cards, but like it was said earlier, they need to have the same GPU and the same memory to run them together.

Different GPUs just aren't meant to communicate between each other and function properly, that's basically the reason why.

Yes. Crossfire for AMD and SLI for Nvidia, but make sure the cards support those setups first. Cheap graphics cards won't support multi-card setups.

No.

That is not true. You can run GPUs from different generations and be totally fine. Example: I run a 970 and 660 Ti in the same build.

If they have the same architecture, they won't SLI or Crossfire together due to artificial limitations. Not architectural limitations.

Okay deep breath here...

You can fit 2 cards, yes.

You can fit 2 cards of the same model 980ti with a 980ti and SLI them they will work together, the manufacturer doesnt matter. Same with AMD.

You can fit an AMD card in with an Nvidia card on some motherboards from a few years ago and they can work together. No boards these days support this however.

You can fit an AMD card with an Nvidia card and use one for gaming and the other for either folding or mining bitcoins.

There were rumours that with DX12 people could just throw anything at the game and it would all pool together perfectly, but you can bet nvidia's not going to let that happen.  Plus, how many DX12 games are out right now :)

Neither would AMD necessarily.

True, they just seem slightly friendlier in cases like this.  and I use nvidia :)

but they more likely then not

I have no opinion at this point. I see them both as companies who are strictly doing what makes them money.

yeah, but AMD is lazy... making snide software stuff to nerf/block their hardware from working alongside Nvidia drivers/cards would take time and effort. Time and effort they would make no money from spending...

After all, AMD has no real proprietary technology that Nvidia cannot offer a different system for. but stuff like Shadowplay and PhysX is totally Nvidia... So it is more enticing for AMD fans to buy an AMD card and supplement with Nvidia card for features, then it is he other way around... Nvidia knows this, that is why they actively use their drivers to detect of AMD drivers are in the system. If yes, their drivers throw a fit.

huh... never knew that... Doesn't it have to be on the same chip like the 980Ti and Titan X?

If you're running them independently, it can be whatever cards you want as long as the drivers are compatible with both cards. In my particular case, my 660 Ti does nothing but folding@home.

Yes.  In fact I think you can put one screen on the onboard graphics and have the other screen attached to a crossfire/sli combo

Would you know how I do this? Do I just plug the monitor in different inputs?

I believe all it takes is pluggin one screen into the motherboard and one into one of the graphics cards, but I've never done it so I can't confirm.

Also, I believe you need a certain chipset, but no one is using B anyways so that's probably a non-issue

Still have my old 6870 drivers installed and my 970 runs fine?

try fit the 6870 into there and you'll see

I have done before, nothing really happened, just went to windows and GPU-Z saw both cards.

Maybe cuz you have a AMD board.

and yes, you can see both cards, its just that people say that you cannot set your 970 as a dedicated PhysX card/Cuda card while gaming on the AMD one.

and or some other features is magically disabled.
