I have an amd athlon x4 860k processor, currently in an asus a55bm-plus board. Would there be any gaming performance benefit if I upgraded to a board with an a88x chipset?

If you really want an upgrade for gaming, get an i5. Great for games.

And no, a newer chipset will not make your games run faster. They might let you overclock higher, but that's about it.
