Title says it all, looking for a 7.1 surround speaker setup, is this doable with a $500 budget, I have a room wired for it, I guess I'll need a receiver and a few speakers not sure though.

Do you care if it's not prewired?

EDIT: As in the speakers are already wired to one another?

That's going to be difficult considering the price. You could definitely get a 5.1 system, but 7.1? That's stretching it a little. At least if you want great sound. You might want to buy used as used speakers tend to be a lot less expensive and broken in.

Buy used in that case. You'll end up with something amazing.

Buy from Craigslist locally. You can find some great 90s hifi systems for cheap. They're broken in, sound warm, and you can test them before buying.

I know about craigslist and that I can buy stuff cheaper used, I want to know if my original question is douable and what's the most I can get new for my money. Saying "buy used stuff on Craigslist" doesn't help me lol, I need specific models if you know any.

Doable, but it'd be a squeeze. You might have to go for monoprice units, if you don't wanna look at used speakers.

Something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVRS700W-R-Refurbished-Bluetooth-Certified/dp/B00KSBZZ8I

http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=109&cp_id=10906&cs_id=1090601&p_id=10565&seq=1&format=2

http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=109&cp_id=10906&cs_id=1090603&p_id=10800&seq=1&format=2

It won't be the most spectacular set, but it's 7.1. You can add their more potent 12" subwoofer later on.

Yeah, those look decent, do you think 5.1 would be a better option?

Receiver of your choice + Miccas? (crossover yourself for extra budget)

For sub the cheapest suggestion would be the Dayton 1000

Pick your choice of what configuration you would want. My work in progress is currently 3 centers for L/C/R, 2 bookshelves for sides, and 2 coaxial in the back. Which would be about $245 for speakers. You can also do 1 center, 2 bookshelves for L/R, and 4 coaxial for side and back for a touch under $200.

It matters on the size of the room, and how much you want those background effects.

I encorage you to buy used.

When buying, keep these things in mind:

Speakers:

Should be 8 ohm.

Bigger woofers can produce more low end.

Use you best judgment

Receiver:

8 ohms, look for a good brand.

Onkyo, yahmaha, dennon, Sony, among others.

Make sure it has HDMI or analouge 5.1/7.1 inputs (this applies for PC only)

Sub woofer:

Bigger is usually better, along with more watts. Look at freq response. Lower is better.

If your room is small and/or you will always be seated in the same place while listening (e.g. computer) I recommend dispensing with the center channel to save $.

Also consider that the jump from 2 to 4 or 5 channels is bigger than 5 to 7.

This.

My 4 channel set up is great for my small room.

Use this post and my post before it.

5.1 is likely a much better option at this price point, imo.

You can get a decent quality new set (or hunt for a better quality used set).

If you don't demand lots of volume and don't have a big room, this might work:

http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-RX-V377-5-1-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B00HZE2WW8

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001202C44/ref=psdc_172563_t1_B001XURGSK

If you're good at hunting for used items, then you may have better choices out there.

If you're okay with used, craigslist is probably the best way to do that...

I'm fine with used just want specififc things to look out for.

Well, it's my living room so I guess it's quite large compared to a single room.
