I've never used an anti-static wrist strap handling PC components. However, I've also always discharged myself on a plugged in power supply that's been switched off. Depending on your area, you may want to invest in one.

So far I have only built PCs without an anti-satic strap, I have seen thought that users recommended the use of this item to prevent damaging the hardware. Should I really worry about that and by myself one of those straps? Are the chances to fry smt that high?

never used one and planning not to anytime soon. no need to worry, just ground yourself on a power supply. thats what i do.
