OC questions in particular

Go to solution Solved by GregButcher,

I found out what the problem was...It was on high performance windows setting, and it constantly locked it at max speed...I put it on balanced and it automatically lower speeds and voltages. Thank you for your time and patience! I'd send you a beer but you're a bit far from me i fear :)

Hey guys,

Cut to the chase, i've built my first system, and the majority of it went without hiccups. Now im overclocking my CPU and have some questions

Rig:

MSI z87-G43

Corsair H80i(stock fans)

Core I5-4670k

evga supernova psu 650w

corsair vengeance pro 1866 cl9 8gigs

Im now running it on 4.0 GHz and on 1.11V-s and it runs stable however:

Im running prime95 and it goes around 80 degrees celsius and also the vent isnt really pushing out heat as i can feel(the radiatior is at the exhaust port and its just a bit warm to hand...)

So my questions are:

Might be the problem that the heatsing isnt mounted full on properly?(it was a huge pain in the butt to put it on and also not sure if its fully on center)

If it runs this hot on pretty "low" clockspeeds and voltages, should i dare to push it even further, or should i just make peace that i have a not-so-good CPU and leave it at that?

If possible i would be happy to just get a few more Mhz-s out of it, like 4.2-4.4 would be more than enough for my liking. I want to maintain quietness and good temperatures, thats top priority above ultimate performance for me.

So what would you more experienced fellows do?

Thank you in advance for every suggestion and constructive comment.

Also if i made a mistake and you can correct me and my knowledge, thats highly appreciated as well!

the problem is prime 95

it is most likely overvolting your cpu.

what cooler are you using

most everything you need to know is right here

Try and use Intel Extreme Tuning Utility insted of Prime95. Also the temps seems a bit high, but don't try and reseat the block unless you have some thermal paste.

Yeah im gonna get some paste tomorrow, and might reseat it, im not fully sure its on properly on centered, and has full contact surface.

You mean low rpm adapters? in that case no, its runnign the stock h80i configuration, only one divider to the connector of the main block.

Also the thing that worries me is that it runs on 45 degrees celsius on low load as well(room ambient temp is approx 28)

Yeah, I mean low RPM adapters. Sometimes I forget words. You could try and set a new fancurve in Corsair LInk. Might be that the fans don't really push air.

I started a stress test on XTU and it give me a good 10 degrees cooler temps. Much more friendly :D

Also thank you for the tip on the overclocking guide, will look through it tomorrow(its evening here).

But yeah isnt 45 degrees on low-load, a bit much?

Not really for Haswell. They run hot due to poor thermal paste under the heatspreader. Personally I wouldn't be satisfied with those temps, but theree is nothing wrong in a CPU running at 45C at idle

your idle temps should be 5-7c above your ambient temps

make sure all your power states are enabled

Enabled them all,  no difference. Also corsair link says even on stress test the cool temp isnt going above 40 really. Is that normal, for my inept mind it looks like it doesnt carry the heat well away or something.

I wouldnt really go deep in OC-ing until at least i get comfortable idle temps...thats why im asking so much silly questions, so thanks for bearing with me :D

when using the ietu to monitor your viltals

does your cpu frequency drop down to 800-2000 MHz ish>

does your cpu core voltage drop down to .7V

all while idle of course.

No and No, tho i set the bios settings to fixed about those...might be that why its not giving good enough temps?

possibly if your core voltage is not dropping that would explain higher idle temps, plus your ambient are hot as well.

the main things to set in the bios are

cpu ratio mode - dynamic

cpu vcore mode- adaptive

i plan on finishing my oc guide with part 4 tonight, this part goes through enabling all the power saving features etc.

switched to dynamic and adaptive but other than the voltage is a bit higher, it doesnt go down... if you have any other things in mind let me know.

Back, i adjusted the bios to adaptive and set the settings similar to the way you have it, except from messing around with the ring ratio and voltage stuff. Still steady 4ghz not dropping or anything... What might be the problem? Its on adaptive and dynamic mode, yet its steadier than a concrete bunker...

Okay I tinkered a bit more, and now i enabled the turbo and EIST and Enchanced Turbo as well after learning it can be adjusted only when clock is auto...now it runs by itself 4-4,1 but still doesnt drop below 4

Also i just remembered, even when not OC-ing at all, on default clocks and settings it always ran on the turbo fequency... i never even saw it dropping below 3.7 tho the stock speed should be 3.4. Might be that i have some other problem than BIOS settings?
