Why not both? (Intel and AMD)

Agreed, I don't see why you aren't making a combination?

Do an i3 and an R9 380.

I3 4170 & gtx 960 2gb

No brainer, But the i3+380 is a better bet again.....

The i3 has an upgrade path later on that actually gives more performance in ALL things single/multithreaded in nature, everything gets improved!

Same can't be said for the other CPU.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

tell me with a straight face that the 960 is more powerful than the 380

Can't do that.... My face isn't straight

  :)

I'd choose whichever benefits me the most via feature sets and my usage needs.

I'd get the 960 for Shadowplay, but the 380 for Brute force performance.

/When I had my 290, I had a capture card, so it was a non-issue for myself personally.

Meh, whatever suits you

only thing i'd take advantage of on nvidia cards are cuda cores and that's a big if

Depends on the specific application - OpenCL in Sony Vegas is a LOT faster

Yeah, I've always found it quite odd how much Sony supports OpenCL compared to CUDA on Vegas.

Yeah, I've always found it quite odd how much Sony supports OpenCL compared to CUDA on Vegas.

It's mostly to do that AMD's cards have double the amount of stream processors compared to CUDA cores but their drivers don't use them properly in games. so yeah.
