File and storage services role (SMB shares) within WS2012 would be my guess but it could be DFS Namespaces.... only way to find out is to ask Linus yourself.

I am sorry but I could not find any that tells you how linus setup's his storage server

Wont be DFS. It will just be standard SMB shares. might have file server resource manager. but that'd be about it.
