Hello everyone. I need a new router. My current one is not even gigabit. I need it to have at least 6 ports and a way to use freeDNS like my current one, which runs DDWRT firmware. I am not looking for one with wireless either. I have a dedicated 600mb/s 2.4GHz AP with support for 5GHz as well. What kind of price am I looking at here?

First off, is your router being bottlenecked at all?

It doesn't REALLY seem like you need a new one from what you described

my existing one only has four ports on it. I have more than four computers and I do not have a gigabit switch either. file transfers over network are kinda turd.

Go online and look for some gigabit server NICs, then find an old PC, cos' I know most of you have about 40 in the basement :P then install the NICs and install PFSense on the machine. Voila, new router.

If you're not feeling so adventurous, go with some cheap router at a thrift store that you know you can install DDWRT on.

Or look for some on eBay.

Unfortunately, we moved and I had to sell/recycle most of that. I might have a couple core2 duo HP workstations that I could use, but they also need RAM

If you don't need all the land bandwidth simultaneously why not just get a dumb switch?

Yep, You can get a 4 port gigabit switch for under $20, eight port for less than $30.

because my modem is just a modem. I need a router somewhere, right?

Assuming your internet is not super duper fast, connect a 6 (or more, why not?) port gigabit switch to your existing router. That will give you gigabit speeds around your LAN, and then a 100Mbit connection to your router and out to your (slower?) internet connection.

How to create a strong password

Size does not matter; it's how you use it

I have a 16 port gigabit switch but it jas gone cactus. Got any reccomended gigabit awitched, perhaps 10 or more ports for future expansion?

You connect the switch to one of the hard outputs of the existing router.  No, it won't make the existing router gigabit, but is that really an issue now?

I guess not with a switch. I might look into using the existing router as an AP on one side of the house, and the AP on the other side...

Wait when you use gigabit switch, not every port will run at gigabit at the the same time so you will still be speed limited. Do you need the speed or is that fine?
