CAT5 vs CAT6?

CC268

I noticed at the store that there was CAT5 and CAT6 cables. Is there any noticeable difference?

The amount of bandwidth that travel over a longer distance. Just get CAT6, you probably wouldn't notice the difference unless you had Gigabit internet.

Actually Cat5 will suffice for 100 Mbit. Cat5e is the minimum for Gigabit ethernet, which is required for an internet connection faster than 100 Mb/s.

If its for small patch cables, like up to 5 meters not going though wall then CAT5e is still fine.

If your pulling cables though your house then used CAT6 or greater for future proofing.

Price difference, at least in the Netherlands, is not really noticeable.

Cat5e would be your best bet.

If you plan using 10GE, you should get STP cat 7 - if you only plan on using 1GE, STP cat 5e or STP cat 6a should be good enough :)
