IDE or SATA II?

I have my old system(in my sig: "The Dead Legacy") and I'm planning on re-installing Windows because the OS drive is so fucking small(80 GBs / Seagate Barracuda).

I have a spare Hitachi IDE drive at 320 GBs.

 

So I was planning on using my old IDE drive as the boot drive and the 80 GBs as the user's(myself obviously) library stored there.

 

My question is... how much speed am I losing switching back to IDE?

IDE : Data transfer speed for IDE ranges from 5MB/s up to 133MB/s (ATA100/133). The parallel wire transfer mode reached its limit with the speed of 133 MB/s
SATA 2 : 3GB/s

In terms of speed IDE is sufficient, but it's the speed of the drive that's more important. What RPM, how much cache etc. has much more impact.

 

The Hitatchi 320 GB has an average speed of 36 MB/s, 7200 RPM, and 8 MBs of cache buffer.

 

The Seagate Barracuda 80 GB is 7200.3AAE and it's SATA I... ATA/ATAPI-7, also it has 8 MBs of cache buffer as well.

IDE is dead = IDE sux and SATA 2 is the way to go. You understand it now?

You are seriously not helping.

 

Read the description before you post again.

 

My MB can support IDE, and I have this IDE drive collecting dust.

 

Therefore I am asking again, how much performance am I sacrificing for a larger capacity?

It's probably not going to make a large difference. You could use crystaldiskmark to check if you want, but it'll probably be fine.
