So a second dx12 benchnmark is out and...

DannyDem

Well seems like things didnt go out as I was expecting.... with the whole async shaders controversy going on I was honestly expecting amd's fury to win a slight lead or at least be at the same level as the 980ti but acording to the fable dx12 benchmark, 980ti is still in the lead (Amd's mid end cards are performing pretty good though). I know its still too early to tell and by no means I'm trying to create an amd vs nvidia discussion as I use both atm but honestly I was expecting a diffrent result.

Any benchmarks are essentially worthless until there is hardware that fully supports DX12. Even hardware that was supposedly ready for full DX12 support has been proven to be missing some features.

How does that make benchmarks essentially worthless?

Does every DX11 game use every DX11 feature? That's not how APIs are used in the real world.

It's not the games I'm talking about, it's the hardware. If a game is using a feature that only one set of cards supports, then it doesn't really give any indication of how DX12 really affects performance, it just shows which set of hardware supports which features. These benchmarks will be relevant, but only when hardware that is actually made to support DX12 is around. Right now, it is just showing that one set of cards supports a certain feature, and therefore benefits a lot compared to the others, which is not giving a fair comparison for how DX12 affects performance.

I'm not saying that DX12 games will, or should use every feature, I'm saying that so long as there are features that the hardware doesn't support, it is impossible to get a good comparison for how much difference it actually makes.
