pcie bandwidth question

kekarot
Go to solution Solved by Grrizz,

Put a 1x card in a 16x slot and you'll only get 1x bandwidth, put a 16x card in a 1x slot and you'll also only get 1x bandwidth :)

mobo - d945gcnl

the mobo has 2 pcie gen 2 slots

one is x1 and the other is x16

my understanding on the bandwidth of pcie gen 2 slots is as follows

x1 slot = 500MB

x16 slot = 8GB

if i plug a x1 card in the x16 slot, will the x1 card be able be use the additional bandwidth or will it be limited to 500MB of bandwidth since it is a x1 card?

your inputs will be helpful.

the lanes are physical, (as an example) an 8x slot wil only be able to provide access to 8 lanes or less. Never more than the physical size of the connector. And if you're going to plug a graphics card in there, just dont. Nvidia SLI requires at least an 8x slot for each of the cards. AMD doesn't have this requirement but 1x 2.0 is way to little bandwidth for a graphics card anyway. But if you plan to plug in a soundcard you should be good.
