New server build ideas

I'm thinking about building a home server but I have no idea what parts to get. My budget is $300 USD and I will provide the HDDs and OS. I'd like to be able to have 4 HDDs in the case.

Look for decomissioned second hand CPUs and Mobos on Google. You'll get the most amount of performance that way.

A raspberry Pi would work nicely for this

I would highly recommend buying with expansion in mind.  I started off like you thinking I would just have a 5 drive server with a 3220T cpu, but it's now expanded to a Z87 24 drive behemoth with a 4790K and constant 70%+ cpu usage.  Planning for expansion now and spending a bit more will save you money in the long run vs. saving money now and then having to change the entire server to make it grow.

 

You need to think carefully about what your usage model is going to be now and in the future.  Are you going to be happy with 4 drives when 5 years from now you're dealing with 1080 videos that take tons of space?  Are you going to want 10gbit networking?  Are you ever going to use your server to run VMs because you want to get into the always-on automation game?  etc.

 

If you just want a "server" for storage, then I'd be suggesting buying a crappy netbook and plugging a 8TB HDD into it via USB3.  It won't use much power and will serve the purpose.
