Recently, I've been looking to do custom led lighting in my dorm at college.  I've been searching for hours since i don't want to just run a single long strip along the wall and call it quits.  I want to make it look as professional as possible and get equal and adequate lighting throughout the room.  I haven't been able to find anything that can do this short of getting a lamp with an rgb bulb (no thanks).  So i have decided to look into taking a single 5m strip and cutting it.  I don't have much experience with LED lights so i want to make sure my idea works before buying it.

Items i am looking into buying:

What i plan on doing is taking the LED strip and cutting it to size for my needs.  I then plan on using the extra wire and connectors to connect each strip and make a single line.  I want to make sure all of these work together before ordering.  I read a few reviews on amazon that you can't use waterproof leds without needed to solder.  I would prefer to avoid soldering to make this easier.  Thanks for any input.

what is this for exactly? (you say lighting for dorm, but this is clearly unusual) and why do you need RGB?

Lighting around my desk, cabinets, windows, etc.  Just anywhere i think it might look good really.  I'm not concerned with figuring out how to mount it and lay it out in the room, i can figure that part out.  I just need to know if the above will work to split led lighting sections.  I dont want an led strip going between my desk and the window, and then across the room.  I want to use the extra wire to connect to a strip elsewhere.  In short, i dont want to buy multiple led kits for each item or have a single strip of lights spanning the room.  I want to run it as one continues line on one power adapter and one remote.

I hope this helps clarify.

I'm not entirely sure if i need a long in detailed explanation.  Maybe its more complicated than i'm thinking.  I clarified a little what im trying to do above and just need to know if the parts i selected will work with my idea.  If there is a simpler way of doing this, and that's what your trying to tell me, let me know.

Do you know how to solder?

Do you want RGB leds or just white? Or both

How many feet of leds will you need?

Are you trying to connect strip to strip or all the strips to the controller?

I do know the basics of soldering but I would prefer not to. I would prefer rgb over a single color, such as white. I don't know how many feet I need at the moment.

I am trying to connect strip to strip. The 5m role of RGB lights is cutable every 3 lights. So I plan on measuring how much I need whether it be 3 lights or 15 lights and cutting it. I want to then mount that say under the desk. Then I want to cut maybe a 27 light strip and put it on the window. Then maybe a 21 light strip on a cabinet.

The strip on the desk will be connected to the controller. I want to use the extender wire to reach the strip at the window to connect it to the strip on the desk. Then the same things from the window to the cabinet. Now it's one line of rgb lights than run off the same controller and power adapter.

That is what I am looking to do. Maybe not exactly in that order but that general idea.

Before i make a list do you want rgb or rgbw strips? Rgb uses a single 5050 led with all three colors in 1 led, they have a mode that is "white" but in reality it has a very blue tint to it, while a rgbw strip every other led is a pure white led giving you the full rgb plus white control at the same time.....

I bought this kit (see below) to install in my gun safe a couple of years ago, and it looks to be either the same product or very similar to what you are buying.

The roll has lines specifically for you to cut should you wish to separate the roll for any reason.  What you are proposing is possible.

Just a word of caution the IR receiver for the remote requires you to point the remote directly at it.  I've never tested the range but I never get my lights to turn on unless I am bang on with being aligned with the sensor.

I never cut and reconnected mine so I cant say yay or nay about those specific connectors, but the roll should have the ability for that to happen.

have you tried looking to see if there is a youtube video to see if others have done what you are attempting to do?
