Ahm? I guess thats pretty obvious...Speed! Now some smart one might

say buy an SSD...well if you have Filmprojects with a Size over 6 TB, it gets

expensive ;)

So Stripe Size 128 and what block size ?

Smaller the size the faster the performance or stay with whatever default it set as. I ran with 64KB when I had my raid 0 setup and it's a lot faster than 128KB.

Why don't you go all the way to 4 then? Isn't it also about the filsizes your working with? In my case large video files...

Last time I ran raid was like 10 years ago when SSD didn't exist. I has 2x 80GB SATA drives in RAID 0, My board only had a few stripe sizes (can't remember if it went all the way down to 4KB), but the only stripe size I've played with was 64KB and 128KB. In my case the 64KB gave my RAID setup a better performance over the 128KB stripe size. In raid 0, the read transfer rate at 64KB was about 109Mb/s, the 128KB stripe size perform worse and I do remember immediately formatting and going back to 64kB stripe size. These days a single drive is able to achieve near that speed and SSD are a lot faster than that.

I would say keep the default. Unless you're running a bunch of smaller files, like a OS, then drop the stripe size.

Hi,

I intend to run a RAID 0 (yes I know the risks) with 4 x 3 TB WD Red.

What STRIPE size am I soppused to use?

Cheers

Hey there :)

Unless you are working with very small file sizes, I would recommend using the default settings at 128kb. I would really depend on waht you are doing with the array and how big and how many files you are using. This should give you a pretty good idea and insights on the topic: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/RAID-SCALING-CHARTS,1735.html

Feel free to ask if you happen to have any questions :)

Hey there :)

First of all; I really do appreciate your answers which always seem to be straigh forward and containing good

information. Thank you!

I quickly read through the guide provided in the link (read it more detailed later) but it seems as I'll be dealing

with large video files (Cinema DNG, Pro Res HQ) 128kb seems to be the best option if I understood it correctly.

Is the stripe size something you can play with, or would you have to reset the RAID to change from e.g 128kb to

64kb. And how can you measure the performance of each individual strip size, is there a tool?

Thanks for helping.

Cheers

~snip~

For large videos the default setting should be the best option indeed.

Changing the stripe size would require a format so you would lose everything on the array. You can make a backup or an image of all the data, store it somewhere else and then restore it with the new stripe size settings. :)
