the above is the relay i am trying to switch.  I am testing it with an led so i can see it open and close.  I am using ground and whatever voltage a digitalwrite of one is.  the sketch is just loop digital write 1 delay digital write 0(obviously i have the pin in there and everything, but that's what's sending the signal to the relay.  For some reason the relay doesn't switch.  Any ideas/

I can help with programming and hardware.

I don't think a digital signal from an Arduino actually can switch this relay...

Make sure your using the correct pins but just to test just try to pass the correct voltage through the relay to see if it clicks or switches. I'm pretty sure an arduino can provide that power to switch it no problem.

What Voltage are you trying to use on this to switch states on the device?? That will be my first question.

i don't know, just the values zero and one, i don't know what voltages those correspond to

I can help with programming and hardware.

pins are correct, what voltage do i need to use to get it to switch, and what do i didgital write for me to get the pin to output that voltage.  I also don't know why this relay won't switch, and i different one would.  The sketch i'm using worked for a 10a relay, but not this beefy ass 20a relay

Well the data sheet says you Need 240VAC or 28VDC to switch states but if you're not experience with electricity then I wouldn't advise you to mess with that much voltage unless you know what you are doing.

What part number is it in the spec sheet there are various ones ranging from a 5V-110V for the coil check what your arduino outputs also.

You will need more voltage than what the arduino can give you to activate the relay's coil.

Also, be careful when using devices that use coils, they can ruin your day.

Check out this other video, it will help you a lot.

What relay do you specially have can you take a picture of the data printed on the unit itself, there are units that are very similar to the one you have but can operate on 5V from the ardunio to switch the relay like this:

Use transistor.

https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/transistors/operation-modes

And most relays have diode in them. If you see diode symbol on top of it, you're fine.

And ffs buy a multimeter. :)

When the going gets weirdthe weird turn pro.

What do you mean?

The second video will help you make what you want, you can't use the output from the Arduino to switch on the relay you have.
