Hello , I am helping someone with a 1080p gaming build. His budget is not very big so all  I could get was an I3 4170 and an R9 290. He thinks that the i3 is way too weak for gaming and that he would like and i5 . If he gets the i5 he would have to get a GTX 960 4gb instead of an R9 290 , so which one do you think is the better choice for gaming ?

i5 with 280x would be the best

Unfortunately can't find a 280X in my country , and the ones that are out there are as expensive as the 290.

It's a little bit more expensive + needs a better PSU. But I might be able to fit it.

i think in most cases the i3/290 would be better. but some games set a minimum of 4 cores don't recognize the hyperthreading.

so the i5 with a 380/960 would probably be best for guaranteed compatability

R9 380 at the wall uses less than 200 watts, that's without PSU efficiency, so it's really lower.

Well then I might be able to fit an R9 380 + i5 4460 , Would a Seasonic S12II 520 W be enough ?

Is Club 3D a good manufacturer or should I go for MSI/Sapphire?

Club 3D is Powercolor, top tier stuff, no problem with them.
