I'm going to start building my computer in two days so I bought a static wrist band just to be safe (I know some of you will think it's overkill, but I'm just playing it safe). I know your supposed to connect it to the psu, but my psu (evga 650g) is painted everywhere. Will the paint keep the static from discharging (I'm pretty sure paint isn't conductive)? Just want to make sure. My case is completely painted too, just so you know. Thanks!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

The metal will still conduct with paint there. Alternatively, you could connect it to the fan grille. I'm 100% certain there are paints that are conductive as not all paint is the same. If you're going to have the unit connected to the system while plugged in when working on it, make sure the unit is turned off at the back.

Welcome to the forums!

If you have an anti-static wrist strap usually having a longer screw and threading it a little into a mounting screw gives good electrical contact but if your just touching the PSU the paint does affect conductivity but not at a very high level if your discharging yourself by touching it.

Attaching it to your PSU only works if it's plugged in or else it won't actually be grounded.

You can literally attach it to any large metal object. Do to the nature of static buildup connecting to literally any large metal object is fine. You can connect it to the case, a metal table leg, metal table, a big piece of metal you have laying around just because. literally anything made out of metal that is large, and just attach it to it, and anywhere to yourself (wrist, ankle, whichever works best for you)

It is not over kill it is PROPER procedure.

Troubleshooting a pc will make you believe in gremlins.

Thanks everyone! So basically it won't make a huge difference then, I should just make sure to still touch it periodically just in case. Thanks everyone!

I personally do my computer upgrades in my kitchen as it has a nice sized counter that's standing height.

I connect my anti static wrist strap to my boiler as it has plenty of bare metal at the bottom and I know the whole boiler is grounded.

Been 9 years since doing this and so far I've never blown anything and hopefully never will *Fingers Crossed*

It's not a race to the bottom.

Depending on where you decide to build your computer(over concrete or perhaps tiled floor), you can invest in heel straps that will keep you grounded as long as you keep your feet on the ground.
