Hello guys.

I been looking at potentially getting the Lenovo Thinkpad E550 and planning to install Ubuntu Desktop. After scouring the internet, I have came across some sources that state that Linux kernel has few support issues with Broadwell chips (from memory), I'm not sure if that is still the case and if installing Ubuntu will produce results. I also noticed that Linux struggled the trackpoint until about version 3.17+. Also please notify me of any other major issues that have cropped up will later versions and what can I do to avoid them that hopefully doesn't involve spending too much more money.

Many thanks.

  • Intel Core i5-6400
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (Nightmare to install).
  • Gigabyte GA-H170-HD3
  • 2x8GB Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX Black
  • 6GB MSI GeForce GTX 1060 Armor
  • 2x250GB Samsung 850 EVO SSD
  • Some cheap Seagate HDD
  • A cheaper WD HDD
  • 650W Corsair RM650X (only for show. My PC is powered by a room full of hamsters in hamster wheels.)

I'm running a Lenovo T450s (Core i5 5200U) with a nipple (aka trackpoint) as we speak on Arch. Runs perfectly. I can't guarantee for OOtB Ubuntu, but I imagine it would be fine too though.

On older Lenovo (Celeron dual core) trackpoint works perfectly and you can disable pad. Problem is with wifi adapter shutting down randomly and audio being really bad. I'm sure these are better with newer stuff.

on the T450s every piece of hardware worked out of the box on Arch (latest versions of pretty much everything all the time). Audio is being a bit wonky lately, but I'm sure that's just a software bug rather than incompatibility as it works from perfectly after a few reboots.

My laptop is from 2007. I think that explains lot. Audio has popping issue which is because of chip not being really nice to ALSA. Weirdly the issue depends on what software I use and if I'm using speakers or headphones.

As for wifi, its known issue of Intel wifi adapter the laptop has. Nothing i can do as its so old I would need to code driver for it myself. Not going to happen.
