Just to note those are 12V LED strips not 5V USB based ones so it wouldn't be able to power them.

How is that? Just wire them to a molex cable or if you dare, a fan connector for voltage control.

Yes those will work perfect for the situation you described but not for USB power which is what was used. USB can only provide 5V with a max of 0.5-1Amp for most ports.
