10 Gigabit networking only transfers at 1GB/s?

Hey, i was just wondering why 10 Gigabit networking only transfers at 1GB/s?? or does it transfer faster?? I understand that Gigabit and GB/s are different things but it confuses me and i wanted to know more.

10Gbit transfers at a rate of 1.25 GB/s since 1 Gb is 1/8th of a GB

10 Gb = 1.25 GB

 

It makes sense. You could still optimize it a bit to gain an extra few MB/s

You should top out at 1.1-1.2 GBps assuming u have some great SSDs in both machines being bench marked with. Real world 1GBps is still great *8gbps*

1Gigabyte = 8 Gigabit. So 10Gigabits = 1.25 Gigabytes. And it's rare for a connection to be fully saturated, hence why it runs at around 1GB/s

1 byte = 8 bits.

Therefore 10 Gbit/s / 8 = theoretical limit in GB/s. It is slightly above 1 GB/s

1GB is 8Gb, so you're basically getting most of what you paid for.

Another piece the rest of you are missing, Ethernet uses 8b/10b encoding, which means it uses 10 bits of bandwidth to send 8 bits (1 Byte) of data. So in fact 10 Gbit/s bandwidth = 1.25GByte/s bandwidth = 1.0GByte/s data throughput.

10 Gigabit ethernet caps at 1GB/s, not 1.25GB/s :)
