Wired router

Go to solution Solved by Hackzzila,

As of right now I'm using a wireless router with the wireless disabled, but I'd like an actual wired router. The wireless router that I have has a horrible web page and I hate the config settings. If you guys know of a good wired router that would be great.

IT HAS TO BE GIGABIT

Thanks,

Peter

make a pfSense box :D I love mine

well, i personally use a linksys LRT214, but as someone thats pretty good with home/small buisiness devices, even i need a manual for the thing...

that said, it's probably one of the most feature rich routers you can go for without going pro. (theres a slightly more expensive model with dual WAN)

TP-Link Archer C9=best for the price, but there is an ASUS one that's better for like 50 bucks more.

i'm gonna blindly pitch for the asus one then, i've had some "less than pleasant" experience with tp-link products...

What dose it mean when it says its a "VPN Router"?

If you are budgeting around 120 get the TP-Link Archer C9, but if you can push to like 180 something I'd get the " ASUS (RT-AC68U) Wireless-AC1900 Dual-Band Gigabit Router"

I currently don't need WiFi. I have one WiFi router and then another one with the WiFi turned off.

it has a pptp vpn server built in, as well as an openvpn client and server.

its also capable of creating up to 4 subnets (4 lan ports) and some other needlessly advanced stuff :P

--

but compared to the tp-links and d-links i've dealt with in the past, its AMAZINGLY stabile, even when cranking trough a total of 2Gbit of traffic (between different ports)

i had that one.. well.. i had two of them.. both died on day one.

they're amazing boxes, but they REALLY dont like getting crappy power. (which is an issue in my area)

Would I have to configure the VPN part of could I just leave it off?

I had an old WiFi router that died during a thunderstorm. It was my only AC WiFi. I had to buy a new one :(

The weir thing is, is that it turned on, by it wouldn't recognise that Ethernet was plugged in.

if you arent going to use it, you can just leave it turned off.

i mostly got it for that feature tho, because i needed a reliable way of connecting to my home network from class.

(we needed virtual machines in college, so it was a nice thing to have to connect to my home stuff, instead of scraping for ram on my samsung laptop xD)

--

that said, i'm sure theres other wired routers out there that are equal quality, but without the advanced features, and thus cheaper.

Any 8 port routers that you know of?

the issue with that is they're not "8port routers"

they're a router with an 8port switch in the same box, or if you cheap out, an 8port hub.

and i'd suggest you just hook up a cheapo gigabit switch behind a 4port router.

For $40 you cant beat it....

This one is a little cheaper and is probably a little easier to set up.

How much would you say that's going to cost?

Do you have an old PC?

Only a laptop and some shitty Pentium 4 desktops.

The pentium 4's might do, just grab a couple of NICs
