Hard drive decay?

I don't know too much about storage, so I have this old HDD I haven't used since 2011 and it still has Vista on it, it says 500GB on the HDD, but once I plugged it into my current PC it only has 232GB, is HDD decay normal or wtf is going on m8?

You said it still has vista on it so I assume you didn't wipe the drive clean, now can hard drives decay yes, as sometimes parts of the disk become unusable due to corruption, damage, or age. Check the drives partitions and formating if you wiped its data already

can you go to disk management and see if there is any unallocated space?

Format the drive.

If it's not partitioned then it might be stuffed, 232 is a weird number to begin with,
