Hi,

I was just wondering what channel RAM does Skylake use. I've heard it doesn't support (or make good use of) quad channel 4x4. I want to fill all 4 DIMM slots (4x4 -16GB). Can I run 2 kits of duel channel? Or can I just use a 4x4gb kit that will be used in duel channel? I have no idea.

Any info would be great thanks.

4X4 is probably the most optimal set up for Z170 boards right now, idk who told you the stuff youre talking about.

And if youre running 2X 2X4 kits then youre still running 4X4...

dual channel is nomenclature for matched pair (will work in tandem)

you can use two different modules and still achieve dual channel mode, but the

stability could be compromised.

if you're buying new, populate half of your available ram slots, this allows you to double in the future.

(2x4 for 8GB, 2x8 for 16GB in case of 4 ram slots.)

As this is primarily a gaming and casual VFX system I don't think I'll need more than 16GB for quite a while. If I was going to do VFX professionally I would definitely take your advice seeing that professional applications use a lot of hardware resources. In that case I'd probably be building another, more powerful system. Thanks for the reply :)

the thing i have with the "keep room for doubling" is you never know whats gonna happen in the future, or how long that system is gonna come along with you.

people are gonna smack me for saying the word, but in some way leaving ram slots open is kind of "futureproofing" your build.
